“I have wanted a sapphire engagement ring for as long as I can remember. Sean knew this and painstakingly picked out the perfect sapphire to propose with. He didn’t set the stone into a ring, however, and planned to design the setting with me once we were engaged. Sean proposed over a cliff while on a hike in Shell Beach, California. Unfortunately, I did not know the stone was unattached when I opened the box that Sean presented me. The stone fell out of the box and started rolling down the cliff to the ocean below! Thankfully, we caught it just in time! Thereafter, with an engagement disaster averted, we designed a setting for the gorgeous stone together. The finished ring is more perfect than anything I could have imagined!”

Nice To Meet You: Rich Sandomeno | Spragwerks

I have always loved to make things and more importantly customize whatever I had that someone else may have also had.  My stuff always needed to be different.  As a mechanic,  I have always worked with metals and with my hands. Jewelry was just much much smaller but lots of similarities. Believe it or not,  it was a very natural progression.

My name is: Rich Sandomeno
Based in: Los Angeles (Echo Park), California
I work as a: Jewelry & Accessories designer/ fabricator
If I’m not doing the above, I’d be:
working in the conservation department in the Museum of Natural History in NYC, tending to the taxidermy and skeletal specimens….
On my day(s) off, you’ll find me:
who has days off? just kidding, working on my 1930 Model A Hot Rod, at a swap meet or flea market with my wife to be!
I’m often inspired by: everything I see, the world is my muse!
My fridge always has: rice milk, eggs, fresh veggies, leftover Thai
Two songs from my current playlist: No More of That by Stiff Little Fingers & The Cat the Crow and the Snake by The Billy Nayer Show
The best place to eat carp jerky in LA is down at the L.A. river
Love is: the last place I thought I would ever be
If I could pick anyone to be my date to a wedding, I’d go with: my fiancee
If I only have $10 for a wedding gift, I’d get: the ingredients for a pancake breakfast in bed
My drink of choice when giving a toast: sparkling apple cider
If you see me at a wedding, it definitely wont be during the garter toss
Word of advice: be careful what your wish for, you just might get it!

Spragwerks is such a unique & interesting name, what is the story behind the name?
I used to be an industrial diesel mechanic. A coworker and I were on a job overhauling a pair of 12-cylinder engines in an old 110-foot motor yacht. The job was tough. The engine room where we were working was hot and the space was really tight. There was also a lurking captain on the ship, a drunk, who kept poking his head in the engine room, going on and on about “sprag” clutches he used to rebuild for Ford in the olden days. To say he was annoying would be a major understatement. After about a week, we started calling him “Captain Sprag” We still goofed about Captain Sprag and his antics long after the job was done.

Fast forward to 2002: I had been making jewelry for around seven or eight years, mostly for myself and my friends. As my work started to get noticed by friends, and friends of friends, I realized that this could be something that I could pursue on a more serious level. I knew the business needed a name, something that embraced my love for machines, decaying urban surroundings, the obscure, and the organic, as well as my odd sense of humor. The word “sprag” kept popping into my head, so I went with it. I bounced between different names, when, finally, a friend suggested I add “werks” to the end. “Spragwerks” was born.

What attracted you to jewelry-making & design?
I have always loved to make things and more importantly customize whatever I had that someone else may have also had. My stuff always needed to be different. As a mechanic, I have always worked with metals and with my hands. Jewelry was just much much smaller but lots of similarities. Believe it or not,  it was a very natural progression.

Please provide a short description of your style & the aesthetic of your pieces
My prior career as a heavy-duty diesel mechanic, as well as my upbringing in the post-industrial wasteland of northeastern New Jersey, clearly informed my aesthetic. My work explores the tense intersection of the organic by the industrial, and particularly the consumption of one by the other.

What kinds of materials do you mostly work with?
As far as metals go,  Sterling Silver and 14/18K Gold, as well as a variety of precious and semi precious stones. As for models, anything from wax, to beetles and everything (literally) in between!

Compared to other pieces of jewelry, is there anything different or unique about designing & creating wedding bands?
Having the opportunity to make someone’s wedding bands or engagement ring, is such an honor. Particularly if you have ended up at my shop you’re looking for something special, something unique, and having a part in that is an experience that words just can’t describe. That and making something that represents a commitment that is till death. Come on, it doesn’t get any better than that.

If you could design a piece for anybody, who would it be & what would it be?
For my Grandparents, Jean and Paul Sandomeno, two of my most favorite people in the world. Matching 18k hand forged gold bands, both simple and exquisite!

Do you own/wear rings (or other jewelry)? Please pick one/a few of your favorites & describe it for us
Yes I do, a few of them. The first and favorite is an enormous (size 13) skull ring (3.5 ounces of silver). I sculpted it to be used in something else. I liked it so much that I made a ring out of it! I have had a fascination with skulls my entire life (literally), for me that’s what it symbolizes; my life and the people ,places, and things within it. I also have a vast collection of belt buckles (all Spragwerks), most of these are cast from random car and motorcycle parts.

Anything else you’d like to share?
I absolutely love what I do, it is my life’s passion. One of my favorite parts of doing what I do is working with other people, helping them create something one of a kind. Over the years, I have earned a reputation for making jewelry that is off the beaten path. Your imagination pushes me to be a better artist and designer.

“It started like this. Eric told me on Thursday morning Feb 11th 2010, when I dropped him off at the train station, that I needed to pack a bag for the weekend and that I had to leave work an hour early the following day to get on a train to Boston. Since we are both planners, I was immediately stunned. I met Eric Friday afternoon expecting to stay in Boston only to find him in his car. Where were we going? After driving North up through Vermont, I finally figured it out when we were 20 minutes from the Canadian border. I was hoping we were heading to Orford Canada to a little spa in the mountains I had surprised him with a year and half ago. I started to panic because I didn’t have my passport, but I should have known that Eric packed it. He wanted to see the opening ceremony to the Olympics in Canada with me. Even though we weren’t in Vancouver, it was pretty cool to sit in front of the fire place in the suites sipping wine together listening to the Canadian announcers. With room service and a cozy couch, it was one of our best nights together. It always amazes me that everything just keeps getting better and better. How did I get so lucky?

We woke up early on Saturday morning and he said to wear long johns. We took a short drive from the hotel to a tennis club. Had he tricked me and were we really playing tennis? It ended up being a recreational center to rent ice skates. We were going ice skating around Lake Memphremagog. Like a bike path, they had created a skating path around the top of the lake through the little town. Eric outperformed me on the ice, but we laughed and he didn’t let me fall. Surprise number 2 for the day was massages at the other spa in Orford so we could use the spafinder gift certificates that my mom had given to us for Christmas.

After a wonderful day, we got ready to go to dinner with a stop at the wine bar. Eric had made reservations at a little French restaurant in town. Dinner was delicious and we headed back to hit the waterfall jacuzzi outside,  next to the fireplaces in the snow. Since it was only Feb 13th, I assumed we’d exchange Valentine’s day presents on Sunday morning, but Eric couldn’t wait. Since I thought I would have had Friday afternoon to shop, I ordered him sandals and shorts for our trip to Mexico in March, wrapping up pictures of the items. After my poor performance, Eric gave me a Christmas ornament. We had collected one from every place we’d been together so far! I looked quick and I thought it was two bears ice skating, but in fact it was the boy bear proposing to the girl bear with our names on the top in a red heart. He pulled a ring box out of his pocket and asked me if I would marry him! I immediately screamed “Are you serious?” before he could even open the ring box. I said yes through tears and started to hug him, but he wanted me to see the ring. It was gorgeous, just perfect! After tears, laughing, and telling the story behind the ring he told me that only my Dad knew it was going to happen.

I got up really early so we could head back to NH to surprise my mom, but when I called she said they were out shopping. So we killed some time at the outlets in Tilton before heading to my parent’s house in Londonderry. When we got there my Dad asked me if my left hand was cold and started crying. My mom came out of the kitchen laughing because my grandparents, my godparents, Eric’s parents and his Mom had flown up from Florida were all hiding in the dining room. They surprised me and they all knew about it except my Mimi. They also gave me the “book of lies” that they had been telling me for 2 months so I had no suspicions. We had a great dinner, champagne, chocolate covered strawberries and a white chocolate strawberry cake.

He gave me an amazing story to tell the rest of my life and share with everyone. He truly is the one for me and made it one of the best weekends of my life. Everything was so special and precious.”

Brad’s ring
“I wish I could take credit for this design but I can’t.  I had seen it years ago (can’t remember where) and loved it.  It is two “waves coming together.”  It just seemed so appropriate for my husband.  He and I love sailing and he loves being on the water.  I wanted him to have something unique as he is.”

Carla’s ring
“Brad and his friend/jeweler, David Stensrud  (Riddle’s Jewelry) designed this themselves.  The story of ours is a long and unique one and he wanted my engagement ring to be a “one of a kind” extra beautiful.  He told me that “for all the years of your patience putting up with me, I wanted this ring to show how much I love you, every time you look at it.”

Their Story
“As I mentioned above, our story is long and unique. We dated for 13 years on and off. We moved in together in 2002 thinking we were going to “try this out.” Both of us had been through bad divorces years before and we were just a little gun shy. Though our life was really great together and we loved each other so much, Brad never wanted to get married. I had finally gotten over any hesitation I had, and it was something I wanted at some point but I never pressed it. Then after all our years together, we were in a transition of moving to Florida. He had to stay in SD for a couple of months with his job and I was in Florida with mine. It was the first time we had been separated in 7 years.

When Brad finally drove down to Florida to be with me, he came toting that ring. It was all a surprise to me. Within an hour after being here, he said, “I can’t take it anymore!” He ran to his suitcase and came over with a box. When he opened it and I saw that ring, I was actually confused. It wasn’t Christmas and I knew he didn’t want to get married, so I just looked at him. He told me, “This is your engagement ring. I never want to be without you again. Will you please marry me?” It still makes me cry. I couldn’t believe after all these years he really wanted to spend the rest of his life with me.

Our wedding was so beautiful. We both come from large families so we only invited family, our children (who are grown) and a handful of close friends. Our grandchildren were our “wedding party.”  We both are so incredibly happy. This is where we have always felt we belong, together. Brad told me he feels at peace finally.

He was a long time in waiting for but worth every moment. I would do it all again in a heartbeat.”

“I always told Steve that I would wear a zip tie on my finger. It doesn’t matter what the ring looks like. A plain band is fine….

... Steve and I took a road trip to the Florida Keys. He pulled a zip tie out of his back pocket and put it on my finger. He decided after a minute that a zip tie wouldn’t do. It was then that he pulled out the ring and proposed.

Steve and I  met on the beach and we spend so much time on the water (jetskiing) that getting married near the water was very important to us. We decided on Viewpointe because it was very beautiful and along the shores of Lake Erie!”

On the engagement ring
“Matt got my ring from G. Thrapp Jewelers which is a local jewelry store near Butler University (where we went to school). It is known for their one of a kind pieces as well as estate jewelry. My engagement ring (setting) is a Sholdt ring which is a family run Seattle based designer. We were actually able to meet the daughter of the current owners because she was working as a representative for the company on the week that we got it sized. Matt spent a few trips picking out the diamond for the setting. The sales people knew him very well. It was a very personal experience!”

The Proposal
“Matt and I had been dating for awhile. One night after work, we had planned to go to dinner but had to alter our plans because my grandpa called to invite me to the symphony (this was not planned). I only get to hang out with my grandfather occasionally, so I was excited to see him. I went to the symphony and apparently Matt had already visited my mom and dad to ask for their blessing to marry me. He had the ring and had no plans to ask me, but decided he might as well ask me that night. While I was at the symphony, Matt went to Target, bought over a hundred balloons and a balloon pump, and came to my apartment. He blew up a ton of balloons, covered the entire living room floor with balloons,  and put my ring box in the middle. Then he waited for me to come home.

When I arrived at my apartment, I noticed balloons in the entryway. All of a sudden, Matt came down the stairs and was all excited and said hi. I was relieved he had come downstairs, and not some jolly balloon-leaving robber. Matt began to pick up balloons to hand to me…the first one said,”will”. I kind of laughed. The second one said, “you”. I was beginning to think he was joking around. The third one said,”marry”. Then I started crying and said, “If you are joking, I will punch you.” Then the last one said, ” me”. He got down on one knee and said, ” So, will you?” and of course I said yes. He brought me into the room and got the ring box and the rest is history!”

~ Courtney, Bride

“The “cootie catchers” were scattered around the reception hall as decorations and ice breakers for the guests. The bride loved the kid-like novelty of them since she is a school teacher, so it was a perfect and fun prop for shots of the rings.”

~ Sarah Parent, Photographer
